Career Pathways: Finance, Economics & Accountancy

An undergraduate Finance, Economics or Accountancy course will cover a range of topics to equip students to work in the accountancy profession, financial sector, pensions or insurance industry. Modules could include: Tax, Financial Management, Audit, Business Law, Global Economics, Mathematics, Politics, Probability and Statistics.

For accountancy the minimum qualification required is usually the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians). To gain recognised chartered accountancy status an ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification is required. Some degrees may provide exemptions from certain elements within the accountancy qualifications.

Some courses may be accredited with professional bodies such as CIMA, ICAEW and ACCA.

Courses we would recommend for students considering progressing onto an undergraduate degree in Finance, Economics and Accountancy would include:

  • BTEC Business
  • BTEC ICT
  • A Level Business
  • A Level Economics
  • A Level Maths
  • A Level Further Maths

Business Management graduates can expect to have a whole range of career pathways open to them including: accountancy, analyst, actuary, investment banker, audit, corporate banking, account manager, tax inspector.

Universities also look for a range of elements within an application to study Finance, Economics or Accountancy, such as:

  • A GCSE profile including grade 4's and above in Maths and English (some Universities will also ask for a grade 6/B in Maths
  • A Level predictions ranging from AAA – CCC/Distinctions - Merits, dependent on the University
  • Strong academic reference
  • Work experience with reflective learning
  • Extracurricular activities that have developed suitable skills and qualities.
